A Final Cigar Before Paris

My friend was leaving for Paris the following morning.

His Eurostar was booked, his bags were packed, and so we gathered for a farewell dinner.

Two of his friends joined us. I had never met them before, but by the end of the evening, we were sharing stories and laughing as though we had known one another far longer.

After dinner, we walked through Mayfair to the Connaught Cigar Merchants lounge.

When it came time to choose a cigar, I went for the H. Upmann Magnum 54.

A familiar choice, perhaps. I have written about it before, and it has quietly become something of a favourite here at Cigar Letters.

Certain cigars suit certain evenings. The 54 is generous without demanding too much attention. It gives the conversation room to breathe; it is simply smooth as butter.

So we sat together as the evening drew on.

Cigars burning slowly between us.

Life is shorter than we like to admit.

Hence we must ensure our calendars are filled with connection and experience.

Book the table. Take the trip. Spend freely on moments you will remember, and less on things you will forget.

Certainly do not save your best cigars for a future that has made you no promises.

Light one and enjoy it plentifully.

Years from now, we will not remember the things we worried about day to day.

We will remember that final evening in London before Paris.

A bond made through cigars, laughter and conversation.

Perhaps that is what remains in the end.

Not what we kept.

But what we shared.

Behind The Venue

The Connaught has stood at the heart of Mayfair for more than two centuries. It first opened in 1815 as the Prince of Saxe-Coburg Hotel, before later taking the name of Queen Victoria’s son, the Duke of Connaught.

Over the years, it has become one of London’s great meeting places: a discreet home for travellers, artists, actors, businesspeople and generations of Mayfair regulars. They come to dine, drink, conduct quiet business, celebrate, and disappear from the pace of London for a few hours.

In 2022, the hotel opened The Connaught Cigar Merchants: an intimate room where guests and visitors can discover rare and vintage cigars, pair them with exceptional spirits, and enjoy them in good company.

I will always remember this night, the smoke but most of all who I enjoyed it with.
